Celebrity Stylist's Articles

We challenge three celebrities to transform someone to shine like a star.

It’s a daily struggle to look good. Everyday before we walk out the door, we ask ourselves the same question, “what shall I wear today”? Celebrities have it easy being armed with a dozen of stylists and access to fabulous wardrobe while the rest of us have to contend with looking up to magazines, fashion shows and our fave style icons for the latest tip and trends.

But what are celebrities without their stylists? Do they have what it takes to make them stylish without the assistance of a stylist? What if we turn the tables on them? Can they make us look red carpet ready?

The Fashion Patrol asked Miss California 2009 Tami Farrell, Australian supermodel Sophie Turner and ABC’s “True Beauty” winner Julia Anderson to show off their styling prowess by dressing up model Danielle in a cocktail dress. We head downtown L.A. to Chic Little Devil (CLD), Southern California’s largest fashion showroom, to make this fashion event a reality.

CLD is known to be the largest celebrity styling resource in Southern California. They carry pieces such as: Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler and much more! Not only do they carry over 200 top designers, but also dress Hollywood’s hottest stars. They have provided wardrobe for Lea Michele, Juliette Lewis, Mila Kunis, Selena Gomez, Michelle Rodriguez, and Katy Perry.

And to spice up things, we invited MTV Styld winner Brett Alan Nelson to judge the looks these celebrities came up with and he gets to pick his favorite too!

Meet Our Celebrity Challengers

Tami Farrell is a fashionista on the go. “I am a major fashionista. I mean, I am the type of girl, who my friends laugh at… my trunk of my car is a closet! So I can do fashion on the go and I can make anybody look like a star,” Farrell said.

Being a model keeps Sophie Turner up-to-date to the latest in fashion. “I think I am pretty fashion forward because I’ve been in the modeling industry now for several years. I’ve traveled the world, I’ve done runway for a number of people and just being in that industry and in this world of modeling, you are exposed to many different designers and many different looks.”

Julia Anderson doesn’t settle for anything less when it comes to fashion. “I am a celebrity stylist because I’m never afraid to take risks. I am somewhat of a simple person, except when it comes to fashion. With fashion, I am just ready to take out, take the jump, take the leap and wear all these fabulous clothes from all of these designers that worked so hard. And I think they want us to be happy and to wear their clothes and so I hope I do them all justice.”

The Challenge

Transform our model to get ready for a cocktail party using everything they see in the fabulous showroom of Chic Little Devil.

The Looks

Tami styled Danielle with a one-shoulder Iron dress

Tami on why she choose this look for Danielle: “Actually, I had the hardest time since there’s just so many adorable clothes here. But this one, I think is very sexy, it’s slender on her shape. She has an amazing body. I like that it has just a little bit of detailing here along the side and I think that it’s kind of that simple elegance that she can put on and just rock the red carpet.”

Sophie chose this Sheri Bodell dress for Danielle. She added an Elaine Moreira bracelet and Sam Edelman boots.

Sophie on this look: “I saw the bright blue color and it immediately popped out to me. I thought that this type of color is always bold, stands out and guaranteed attention getter and I think it looks great on her. I like the embellishment of it. I thought it had a little rocker vibe and I brought that out with the shoes and just try to make it kind of edgy and cool.”

Julia Anderson chose this champagne David Alexander dress and styled it with a Left Turn necklace, Sheri Bodell boots, and a clutch and cuff bracelet that are both vintage.

Julia on her why she styled Danielle with this look: “I chose this look because I love the champagne color and the silk. I think it’s so lady-like and very sexy and classy. I like the David Alexander dress…the back is my favorite. I love the cut out, again with a lot of class but still a little bit of sex appeal and legs are absolutely stunning. I think another key point of the outfit is the Left Turn hand made 78,000 necklace. I mean, it’s pretty insane. We found a vintage clutch and we grabbed some heels. I think all in all it’s a beautiful outfit without trying way to hard. Yeah, sometimes less is more.”

The Judge

Brett Alan Nelson

With Danielle made up and ready to go, we asked Brett Alan Nelson what he thinks of the looks our celebrities have come up with.

Brett on Tami’s style: “I think Tami did a really great job. This is a really beautiful one-shoulder dress done by Iron. It’s really simple, it’s a great color on the model and with this shoulder detailing here, it’s really a piece that pops without a little being too crazy. It’s a really beautiful fit and short and sexy and shows a little bit skin…shows off a woman’s shoulders which is always a plus to show off.”

Brett on Sophie’s look: “I think Sophie did a really good job and catching the whole rocker style with our model. She’s wearing a really beautiful Sheri Bodell dress and gorgeous bracelet by Elaine Moreira. This is definitely a type of look that I think is more like MTV Awards because it’s a little rocker and it’s something I, personally, as a stylist would not put a client into to go to a cocktail or evening party just because it’s a little rocker and little bit dress down because I feel like when you go to a cocktail party, you want to be elegant and pretty and this is more casual rocker.”

Brett on Julia: “Julia did a really great job of picking out the champagne colored David Alexander dress. It is a short cocktail dress that will show off… but she has great legs and I think it’s definitely something you have the legs for to pull it off. And the shoulder pads, which are definitely back in style right now, are really great on a woman and really show off the body. And then the cut out in the back is really sexy because it’s not showing too much. It’s a really elegant cocktail dress but when you turn around it will really give you sex appeal which Julia mentioned. And the other great thing she picked is this watermelon Left Turn necklace which is amazing, it’s definitely a show-stopper you don’t want to take away from.”

Brett’s Choice for The Fashion Patrol’s Celebrity Stylist Challenge

Brett on why she chose Julia’s look as the winner for this challenge: “I actually think that Julia, out of all three of our celebrities that chose the outfits, did the best job because it is as she said simple and there’s not a crazy lock to it. It’s a simple, really elegant beautiful dress and the necklace that she picked is a one-of-a-kind beautiful watermelon glass necklace done by Left Turn that is a showstopper on the red carpet. Everyone will want to know where it’s from…so Julia really did the best job.”

Last Saturday, we patrolled the Chic Little Devil’s (CLD) office in downtown Los Angeles to film The Fashion Patrol’s ‘Celebrity Stylist’ segment. As soon as anyone enters the beautiful white, high ceilings and glass windows, it is heaven for any fashionista. From Japanese inspired jewelry by Megumi to Alexander McQueen runway clothing; every piece was breathtaking.

With such a vast collection of garments, handbags, jewelry, and shoes, we asked three beautiful celebrities to style themselves using everything in the Chic Little Devil showroom (and backroom).
Tami Farrell, Miss California in 2009; Sophie Turner, an Australian supermodel with a law degree; and Julia Anderson, the ABC’s True Beauty winner. All three had a blast going through the showroom and created an amazing look for a red carpet event.

Tami can’t stay away from embellishments! She chose a beaded number by Sheri Bodell and teamed it with black strappy heels.

Sophie strikes a supermodel pose in this nude Iron dress and accessorized it with a Gasoline Glamour ring and Alexander McQueen strappy platform.

Julia went wild over this animal print Sheri Bodell tunic from the Fall 2010 collection and wore it with black platform pumps.

Celebrity Stylist: Jessica Hall

March 3rd, 2010 8:16 PM - Categorized under Celebrity Stylist, TFP Favorites

What: The Celebrity Stylist segment of The Fashion Patrol features celebrities who take on a specific fashion challenge. Without the help or assistance of a stylist, we asked them to conjure up two outfits for total strangers using only the merchandise found inside a particular store. We wanted to find out  their “FSQ” aka their “Fashion and Style Quotient”. Turning the tables was fun but you’ll have to hear what the critiquing  stylists have to say  and this is when things get more interesting.

Where: Curate Couture, a designer consignment boutique in Brentwood, California.

Who: Celebrity Stylist Challenger: Jessica Hall, TV and Radio Personality, Host for TV Guide.

When Jessica is not busy hosting the red carpet for the T.V. Guide Channel, you can catch her every Monday morning at 10:00 am (PST) co-hosting Playboy Radio’s “The Morning After on Sirius/XM Channel. Jessica was in the MTV reality series ‘Burned’ and is an established model having completed 20 calendar photo shoots and over 600 bill boards, most notably for Bud Light campaigns.

Jessica’s Style Icon: Kate Walsh. “I saw her and she is just stunning and beautiful and every time I see her on the red carpet, she just has the look that I want to portray.

Shopping Habits: “I go in and something looks good on a hanger, I buy it. I rarely try anything on, I don’t know — no patience. I see that it looks good, I throw in on, I know my size, let’s go!”

The Judge:

Karuna Tillmon, Stylist

Challenge #1 Casual Look:

For Jessica’s casual wear, she chose this Roberto Cavalli top with black Raven shorts to go with the model’s gladiator sandals.
“It’s light and airy, it’s cute. Colors look amazing on her and her legs are so long. And she looks gorgeous.’ Jessica said on why she chose this look for Jasmine.

What Karuna had to say about Jessica’s look for the model: “I think Jessica did an amazing job. I think this outfit is perfect for Jasmine and her body type and she has an amazing waist. I also love that she chose to wear shorts because Jasmine’s legs are so amazing, so we want to show that off. The kimono style sleeves are just beautiful, it adds like a soft touch around the neckline. I love the sandals — flats for summertime. Perfect anytime since it’s California.

What the outfits needs: To bring attention to Jasmine’s face, Karuna added a gold pair of earrings. “Accessories are what reinvents outfits. It makes you feel fresh and new everyday,” she adds.

Challenge #2 Evening Look:

For Jasmine’s evening look, Jessica chose this sexy pink dress with black Manolo Blahnik sandals. Hall loved this dress so much that she would wear that dress in a heart beat. “It looks better on her just because she’s so tall. With me, it would probably be a formal gown,” Jessica said.

Jessica also love the color specially that it goes well with Jasmine’s skin tone. “I like that it makes her waist look really tiny and it’s light and flowy. I love the low neckline and the back is gorgeous. There are ten different ways on how you can actually wear this. It’s like wearing something new every week!”

What Karuna had to say: “I love this look. I think Jessica, again, did a great job. I think she chose a dress for Jasmine that is extremely versatile and you can really get creative with it. I love the color on her, it feels spring-y and soft and really feminine. I love that she tied in the black shoes so we can play with the accessories.

What the outfit needs: Karuna added a silver necklace, a ring and a black Louis Vuitton purse.

Jessica also got to style for herself. When she arrived for the shoot, she wore this little blue number with a sexy back she got from a little boutique with BCBG heels. Then she chose this fabulous black little romper and YSL heels. She loves rompers because it’s something she can wear with flats for a casual look or add heels if she wants to glam it up for the night.

Jessica loved styling so much she jokingly said she was going to give up her hosting and modeling gig to become a stylist!
